Tomonari Hashimoto

Born in 1990 in Yuasa Town, Wakayama Prefecture, Tomonari Hashimoto graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Art and Design from Kanazawa University in 2017. He has since been creating unique works of art using ceramics as his primary medium.
In 2019, Hashimoto was selected as a finalist for the LOEWE Craft Prize. His works have been acquired by prestigious institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in the UK and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the US, earning him widespread acclaim both in Japan and internationally.
Hashimoto’s creations transcend the conventional boundaries of ceramics, characterized by their striking textures and commanding presence. His works often combine robust, tactile ceramics with minimalist mortar structures, resulting in a harmonious yet bold aesthetic. Using entirely hand-built techniques, he shapes massive geometric forms, such as spheres and monolithic sculptures, layer by layer. These are finished with glazes rich in metallic oxides and fired in custom-built kilns, carefully designed to accommodate their scale.
Despite their inorganic forms, Hashimoto’s sculptures establish a profound dialogue with the human body. Their textured surfaces transform subtly over time, responding to changes in light and the passage of time, offering viewers an evolving sensory experience. His works captivate not only the spaces they inhabit but also the people who engage with them, leaving a lasting impression.

The foundation of my current creative work is rooted in my childhood experiences. I was deeply absorbed in activities like origami and model building and had a period of fascination with temples, shrines, and particularly Buddhist statues. Growing up, I was surrounded by sculptures created by my father, who was a sculptor, including plaster and bronze works. I also found joy in observing the greenery in our garden from my window, the mountains beyond, and the shifting landscapes visible from a car window.
In my approach to work, I aim to maintain a certain distance from personal thoughts and emotions, yet I strive to create works that still convey the artist’s passion and intensity. I value the intangible elements that cannot be calculated, such as the subtle presence of an object and the environment surrounding it.
In recent years, I have explored works that combine ceramics with mortar, an extension of the relationship between the artwork and it
pedestal. The ceramic components, shaped by hand, undergo forming, drying, and firing, resulting in subtle distortions and cracks as they leave the artist’s hands. In contrast, the mortar components, poured into molds, are crafted with millimeter-level precision, faithfully adhering to numerical accuracy. By alternating between these two materials, I rediscover their unique qualities and maintain a balanced desire for creation.
My work primarily consists of repeating the same processes, yet these are highly influenced by weather conditions, making it rare to have identical circumstances. As a result, I have become acutely aware of temperature, humidity, wind, and seasonal changes, finding small discoveries and making incremental adjustments each time.
Recently, I have come to deeply appreciate how precious and fulfilling it is to be able to calmly repeat the same tasks day after day.
