Naoko Serino

国内外の個展・グループ展に多数出展しており、browngrotta arts(USA)、Kulturhuset Rejsestalden(Denmark)、The Sculpture Center(USA)、Villa Bernasconi(Italy)などで作品を発表。

Naoko Serino is an artist who has been captivated by the rustic power and delicate texture inherent in the natural material of jute, elevating it into sculptural expression.
The three-dimensional forms born fromb fibers that overlap, twist, unravel, and are tied together again evoke layers of memory and the growth of living organisms, inviting quiet dialogue with the viewer.
While Serino’s works honor the natural breath of the material itself, they also carry a sense of tension and poetic openness within their forms.
The coarse grain of jute, its texture that gently embraces shadows, and the deepening hues that emerge over time—
all intertwine in intricate ways, radiating a warmth and presence possible only with natural materials.
She has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad, presenting her work at institutions such as browngrotta arts (USA), Kulturhuset Rejsestalden (Denmark), The Sculpture Center (USA), and Villa Bernasconi (Italy). She was also selected to participate in the Fiber Futures – Japan's Textile Pioneers exhibition.
In 2008, she received the Silver Prize at the 10th Kajima Sculpture Competition. At a time when sculpture was primarily associated with materials such as metal, wood, and stone, her fiber-based work was recognized as sculpture—an innovative use of material that challenged existing conventions. This was highly regarded as a remarkable and
groundbreaking achievement.
She later received further distinctions, including the Encouragement Prize at the 16th Kajima Sculpture Competition in 2020, among many other awards.
