Wa.gallery will be holding an exhibition of works by metal artist Kosuke Kato (1988-) and Masayuki Nagare (1923-2018) as a joint project with Ueda Arts.
The two artists' share similarities in style. For instance, they both use difficult materials and their uncompromising workmanship. But most of all, they both take rugged and heavy materials and sublimate them into flowing forms so fine, and so soft.
The works provide the impression as if they are a part of the beautiful expressions of nature and it is bound to capture the viewers’ hearts.
The material Kato uses is Damascus steel. Which is type of layered steel made by forge-welding and forging nickel and several types of steel. Masayuki Nagare uses granites imported mainly from South Africa and Sweden. They are harder than domestic granites and the color is black.
Earlier in the year, along with Mr. Ueda, the owner of Ueda Arts, we visited Kato’s studio for a meeting. Carrying with us the “Nagarebachi” by Nagare.
Seeing Nagare’s work, Kato realized that the "forms created from forging" existed in the details of Nagare’s works. For this exhibition, Kato created a piece, where he incorporated the form of the plectrum into the Damascus base and from there, created the curves and lines, the unique features of his works. Paying tribute to Nagare and the beautiful forms he created. The exhibition will contain about 10 other Damascus pieces by Kato. 3 granite pieces, and one bronze piece by Nagare.
Two artists, different as human beings, from a different time and environment, using different materials. We invite you to the world of their creation of steel and stone.
