For the upcoming "Art Kudan 2025" exhibition, Wa.Gallery will collaborate with Kobijutsu Yanagi for a joint presentation. The exhibition theme, "Fueki Ryuko" (The Immutable and the Innovative), aims to create a space where visitors can experience the interplay of immutability and innovation
The showcased works will merge the enduring essence of timeless creations with the transformative evolution of innovation, offering a profound exploration of their shared essence.
Our designated exhibition space, located in the historic Kudan House (formerly the residence of Yamaguchi Mankichi), is rich in history. Originally a garage, it was also reportedly used as a detention space for Yamaguchi during the post-war GHQ occupation. This unique and independent exhibition area will be fully utilized to create an extraordinary display.
From Wa.Gallery, three works by artist Tomonari Hashimoto will be presented, including two pieces previously exhibited at the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Museum of Art (a branch of the Tanabe City Museum of Art) in 2024, alongside one new creation. Kobijutsu Yanagi will showcase a rare seated statue of Fudo Myo-o from the Kamakura period.
To enhance the spatial experience, TOMOKO SAITO AROMATIQUE STUDIO has created a custom fragrance inspired by the theme, providing visitors with an olfactory journey. Additionally, Kyoto-based musician Masahiko Takeda has composed a unique soundscape specifically for this exhibition.
We invite you to immerse yourself in this extraordinary space, where the interplay of architecture, aroma, sound, and art come together to create an unforgettable experience.

Tomonari Hashimoto
Born in 1990 in Yuasa Town, Wakayama Prefecture, Tomonari Hashimoto graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Art and Design from Kanazawa University in 2017. He has since been creating unique works of art using ceramics as his primary medium.
In 2019, Hashimoto was selected as a finalist for the LOEWE Craft Prize. His works have been acquired by prestigious institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in the UK and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the US, earning him widespread acclaim both in Japan and internationally.
Hashimoto’s creations transcend the conventional boundaries of ceramics, characterized by their striking textures and commanding presence. His works often combine robust, tactile ceramics with minimalist mortar structures, resulting in a harmonious yet bold aesthetic. Using entirely hand-built techniques, he shapes massive geometric forms, such as spheres and monolithic sculptures, layer by layer. These are finished with glazes rich in metallic oxides and fired in custom-built kilns, carefully designed to accommodate their scale.
Despite their inorganic forms, Hashimoto’s sculptures establish a profound dialogue with the human body. Their textured surfaces transform subtly over time, responding to changes in light and the passage of time, offering viewers an evolving sensory experience. His works captivate not only the spaces they inhabit but also the people who engage with them, leaving a lasting impression.
